X Tests Free Version of Grok AI with Updated Logo for Some Users

X (formerly Twitter) is reportedly testing a free version of its AI chatbot, Grok, providing limited access to non-subscribers. This marks the first time users who don’t subscribe to X Premium are able to experience the chatbot. The development comes shortly after xAI, Grok’s developer, rolled out the Grok API for broader use.

Key Highlights:

  1. Free Access with Restrictions: Some users have reported gaining access to Grok for free, albeit with certain limitations. Non-subscribers are reportedly allowed:
    • 10 Grok questions every two hours
    • 20 Grok mini-questions every two hours
    • Analysis of up to three images per day
Free users must also have accounts that are at least seven days old and linked to a phone number.
  2. Limited Regional Availability: TechCrunch confirmed that the free version is being tested in New Zealand, though other regions might also have access. Staff at Gadgets 360 reported that it isn’t yet available in India.
  3. Updated Logo for Grok: The current wordmark logo for Grok is said to be changing to a socket-like icon, marking a visual update alongside the expanded access.
  4. Grok API and Developer Incentives: xAI recently launched the Grok API, offering developers $25 in free credits each month through the end of 2024. Additionally, developers who had already purchased prepaid credits were given matching free credits monthly as an incentive.

With these changes, X aims to widen Grok’s reach and foster its integration into various applications through developer access.
