Apple is set to enhance its photo-editing offerings by acquiring Pixelmator, a leading software maker known for its advanced editing tools. Announced on Pixelmator’s blog, the Lithuania-based team will join Apple, marking a significant step for both companies. Founded 17 years ago by brothers Saulius and Aidas Dailide, Pixelmator has developed apps for Mac, iPad, and iPhone, often highlighted in Apple’s marketing, including recent iPad showcases.
This acquisition provides Apple users access to pro-grade editing tools for the first time since Aperture was retired a decade ago. Pixelmator’s flagship app, Pixelmator Pro, rivals Adobe’s software, offering layers, vector tools, and integrations with Apple-specific features like iCloud, Shortcuts, and Apple Pencil.
Apple confirmed the acquisition but didn’t disclose the terms. While Pixelmator Pro currently costs $50 on Mac and $10 on mobile devices, the company assures users that no immediate changes are planned. Additional updates will be shared in the future.
