Ubisoft’s Assassin’s Creed Shadows is set to take the franchise in a new direction, with a fresh focus on the modern-day narrative, which has been less prominent in recent titles. The game, scheduled for release on February 14, 2025, will feature a story set in 16th-century Japan, and will highlight the journey of two protagonists: the samurai Yasuke and the shinobi Naoe.
Key Features and Modern-Day Storyline
For the first time in years, Assassin’s Creed Shadows promises a more integral and meaningful modern-day storyline that contrasts with the historical narrative. Ubisoft aims to return the modern-day segments to prominence, which had been sidelined in recent releases. The game will explore themes of memory, identity, and autonomy, providing a deeper connection between the past and present.
Marc-Alexis Coté, Ubisoft’s executive producer, mentioned that the modern-day aspect will no longer feel like a peripheral side quest. Instead, it will serve as a critical element of the player’s overall experience, offering contrasts with the historical events unfolding in the game.
Historical Setting and Protagonists
Set in the 16th century Japan, Assassin’s Creed Shadows will introduce two new protagonists: Yasuke, a real-life samurai of African descent, and Naoe, a shinobi. Both characters are part of the Assassin Brotherhood, a dynamic that promises to blend samurai culture with the covert operations of the shinobi, offering an exciting mix of gameplay and story.
Release Delay and Reception
The game’s release, originally planned for November 15, has been delayed to February 14, 2025, following the underwhelming launch of Star Wars Outlaws. Ubisoft also responded to criticism, including controversy surrounding the depiction of Yasuke, by adjusting the game’s narrative focus.
Despite the delay, Assassin’s Creed Shadows is highly anticipated due to its unique setting, dual protagonists, and a revitalized modern-day storyline that will set the stage for future installments in the series.
