Gemini AI Assistant Introduces Google Home Extension for Smart Home Control

Gemini, Google’s AI assistant for Android, has rolled out a new feature: a Google Home extension that enables users to control a range of smart home devices. Currently available in public preview, this extension expands Gemini’s capabilities by integrating with the Google Home ecosystem, allowing it to manage lights, appliances, and other connected devices in users’ homes.

Key Highlights of the New Extension

  1. Device Compatibility and Requirements:
The extension lets Gemini control a variety of smart home devices like lights, air conditioning, thermostats, fans, and more. However, for this integration to work, both the Gemini app and the devices need to be connected to the same Google account.
  2. Limitations:
The extension currently supports only English prompts and functions exclusively on Android devices. Gemini can’t perform security-sensitive tasks that require a PIN, stream video from cameras, or execute predefined routines.
  3. Using Gemini for Smart Commands:
With natural language processing, Gemini allows users to issue conversational prompts, like “Set the dining room lights for a romantic evening” or “Turn the fan to sleep mode.” This flexibility provides a more intuitive experience compared to traditional command structures.
  4. Public Preview Access:
For now, only users enrolled in Google Home’s Public Preview programme can access this feature. The extension supports both text and voice commands but is not available on iOS at this time.

Setup Instructions

To use the Google Home extension:

  1. Ensure Gemini is the default assistant on your Android device.
  2. Open the Gemini app, sign in to your Google account, and follow the prompts to connect Gemini to Google Home.
  3. Enable the extension and grant permissions for Gemini to access and control connected smart devices.

Additional Features and Future Enhancements

Gemini already supports managing Google Workspace, Maps, YouTube, and YouTube Music. Rumors suggest that Gemini may soon include calling and messaging features from the lock screen, potentially offering even more functionality than its predecessor, Google Assistant.

As AI integration into daily tasks becomes more sophisticated, this Google Home extension marks a significant step for Gemini in providing users with seamless and voice-controlled smart home management.
