Google’s Gemini AI Assistant is now rolling out a long-awaited “Utilities” extension that enables it to perform various essential tasks on Android devices. Initially announced at the Google I/O, this extension allows Gemini to control core smartphone functions like alarms, timers, volume, and more, making it more capable and competitive with Google Assistant. The rollout will gradually reach Android users over the next few weeks.
Key Features of the Utilities Extension:
- Smartphone Controls: Gemini can now set and silence alarms, control timers, adjust volume, and manage features like Do Not Disturb (DND), Battery Saver, flashlight, and Bluetooth.
- Enhanced Multitasking: The extension supports multi-command functionality, allowing users to perform several tasks with a single prompt, such as “Set an alarm for 7 AM, turn on Battery Saver, and open my calendar.”
- App and Web Access: Gemini can now open apps, websites, and even the settings menu, bridging a gap in functionality compared to Google Assistant.
- Media Control: Users can play, pause, and navigate media using Gemini on the native media player, though compatibility with third-party apps like Spotify is not yet available.
Currently, this feature is limited to English-language prompts and requires setting Gemini as the default assistant on Android devices. As it expands, Gemini’s Utilities extension aims to make AI integration on Android more versatile and hands-free.
