Microsoft has introduced a powerful new AI feature in its classic Notepad app, now available in preview for Windows Insiders. With this AI-Powered Rewrite tool, users can refine their text by rephrasing sentences, adjusting the tone, or modifying the content length—all with just a few clicks. Here’s a closer look at what this AI upgrade brings to the Windows 11 experience.
AI-Powered Rewrite in Notepad
Initially designed as a simple text editor, Notepad has seen little change since its debut in 1983. However, Microsoft’s latest update marks a leap forward in functionality. Using a GPT AI model, the Rewrite feature allows users to highlight text, right-click to select the “Rewrite” option (or use the Ctrl + I shortcut), and choose from three alternative versions of the selected text.
This feature, currently available in select regions, is aimed at helping users improve writing quality by offering tailored options for rephrasing, adjusting tone, or shortening and lengthening content.
Limited Preview Access and Usage Credits
The Rewrite tool is currently being tested with Windows Insiders in regions including the US, France, UK, Canada, Italy, and Germany. These users receive 50 credits to experiment with the feature. For Microsoft 365 Personal and Family subscribers in Australia, New Zealand, Malaysia, Singapore, Taiwan, and Thailand, AI credits for Copilot Pro also allow 60 credits a month for testing the Rewrite feature.
Security and Privacy Built-In
Microsoft has taken steps to ensure the Rewrite tool operates securely. The tool processes text via Azure’s cloud-based infrastructure without storing any content, ensuring privacy while delivering fast, reliable text generation. Additionally, pre-built content filters remove any harmful, offensive, or inappropriate text, keeping the rewrite results suitable for a wide range of users.
A Glimpse of the Future of Windows
The AI-powered Rewrite feature is just one of the tools Microsoft is rolling out to create a more intelligent and user-friendly Windows 11. As AI becomes more deeply embedded in everyday applications, Microsoft is making strides to keep Windows relevant in an AI-driven world. Keep an eye on further updates as the company continues to refine this exciting feature for its global audience.
