Oppo and Hong Kong Polytechnic University (PolyU) have renewed their partnership to continue developing advanced AI imaging technology. Building on a three-year collaboration initiated in 2022, Oppo has committed CNY 30 million (approximately Rs. 35.5 crores) over the next five years to establish a research center at PolyU. Scheduled to open in January 2025, this center will focus on cutting-edge AI imaging breakthroughs and talent development.
Investment and Research Goals
The renewed agreement, signed by Oppo’s Industry-Academia Affairs Head Zheng Qin and PolyU’s Vice President Christopher Chao, aims to foster innovation in AI-powered imaging solutions. Oppo’s funding will support the creation of a Joint Innovation Research Centre and expand PolyU’s co-trained PhD and postdoctoral programs in AI technology. Professor Jin-Guang Teng of PolyU noted that the new Faculty of Computer and Mathematical Sciences will house the research center, addressing AI challenges and supporting the next generation of tech talent.
Potential Focus of Research
While details of the AI imaging advancements remain undisclosed, the partnership is expected to explore computer vision technologies. These developments could enhance Oppo’s AI capabilities in image and video processing, potentially impacting future Oppo devices with more intelligent, context-aware camera functions.
